Art

At Harvest International School we want to provide our students with the best education possible and that includes providing them with an outlet where we can encourage their natural curiosity and use their creativity. Art is one of our extra-curricular activities where they can do so. We have divided our art classes into two levels, level 1 for the grades 1-4 and level 2 for the grades 5-9.

Level Division

Level 1: Grades 1-4

  • Focus: Encourage creativity, confidence, and establish a foundational understanding of the meaning of art.
  • Approach: Practical skills development with diverse materials under the guidance of the art teacher.

Level 2: Grades 5-9

  • Subject Goal: Develop understanding and appreciation through hands-on exploration, critical thinking, and creative expression.

Grade-Level Overview

Art is a broad subject encompassing the creation of visual, auditory, and performing forms of expression. It provides
individuals with the opportunity to explore their imaginations, emotions, and perspectives through various mediums and techniques.

Grade 5

General Objectives

  • Introduce students to the fundamental elements and principles of art (line, shape, color, texture, form, and space) through DIY, Crafting and Drawing.
  • Encourage exploration and experimentation with a variety of art materials and techniques
  • Foster basic drawing skills and creative expression through artwork
  • Initiate the development of visual literacy and critical thinking skills related to art
  • Spark an appreciation for the diverse forms and roles of art in society

Outcomes

By the end of grade 5, students will be able to:

  • Identify and apply the basic elements of art in their creations
  • Experiment with various art materials and techniques, such as drawing, painting, and collage
  • Utilize fundamental drawing skills to represent recognizable forms and objects
  • Express their thoughts and emotions through personal artwork
  • Begin to analyze and interpret works of art, recognizing elements and basic principles of art.

Grade 6

General Objectives

  • Identify and explore the elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, form, and space)
  • Experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques
  • Develop basic drawing skills
  • Create original artwork that expresses personal ideas and feelings
  • Begin to analyze and interpret works of art

Outcomes

  • Identify and apply the elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, form, and space) in their artwork.
  • Experiment with various art materials and techniques, such as drawing, painting, and collage.
  • Utilize basic drawing skills to create recognizable forms and objects.
  • Express personal ideas and feelings through their artwork, incorporating imagination and creativity.
  • Develop a basic understanding of how to analyze and interpret works of art, including identifying elements and principles of art.

Grade 7

General Objectives

  • Continue to explore the elements of art and principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, and unity)
  • Develop more advanced drawing skills
  • Experiment with a variety of painting techniques
  • Create more complex artwork that incorporates multiple elements and principles of design
  • Analyze and interpret works of art from different cultures and historical periods

Outcomes

  • Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the elements and principles of art, including balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement, pattern, proportion, rhythm, and unity.
  • Apply their understanding of drawing principles to create more complex and realistic compositions.
  • Experiment with a variety of painting techniques, such as watercolor, acrylic, and tempera.
  • Create artwork that incorporates multiple elements and principles of art to convey a specific message or emotion.
  • Analyze and interpret works of art from different cultures and historical periods, considering the artist’s background and the cultural context.

Grade 8

General Objectives

  • Expand their understanding of the visual arts through exposure to a variety of art forms (painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, digital art, etc.)
  • Develop their own artistic style and voice
  • Experiment with advanced art techniques and materials
  • Create personal artwork that reflects their unique perspective
  • Critically analyze and interpret works of art, considering the artist’s intent, context, and techniques

Outcomes

  • Expand their knowledge of the visual arts by exploring various art forms, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, digital art, and performance art.
  • Develop their own artistic style and voice, reflecting their unique perspective and interests.
  • Experiment with advanced art techniques and materials, such as mixed media, clay modeling, and digital tools.
  • Create personal artwork that demonstrates a cohesive style and reflects their artistic growth.
  • Critically analyze and interpret works of art, considering the artist’s intent, techniques, and the cultural context.

Grade 9

General Objectives

  • Explore the relationship between art and other disciplines (literature, history, science, etc.)
  • Develop their ability to critique and evaluate works of art
  • Create a cohesive body of work that demonstrates their artistic growth and development
  • Share their artwork with others through exhibitions, presentations, or online platforms
  • Reflect on their artistic journey and set goals for future learning

Outcomes

  • Establish connections between art and other disciplines, such as literature, history, science, and social studies.
  • Develop the ability to critique and evaluate works of art, providing constructive feedback and identifying strengths and weaknesses.
  • Create a cohesive body of work that demonstrates their artistic growth and development over time.
  • Share their artwork with others through exhibitions, presentations, or online platforms, gaining confidence in their artistic abilities.
  • Reflect on their artistic journey, identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement, and setting goals for future learning.

Artistic Journey and Outcomes

By the end of grade 9, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the elements and principles of art
  • Create original artwork that is visually appealing and expressive
  • Analyze and interpret works of art from a variety of perspectives
  • Communicate effectively about art using appropriate vocabulary and terminology
  • Appreciate the role of art in society and its ability to connect people across cultures and generations
